Young, Grand and Free

How old do your grandparents make you feel?

Their youthful spirit gives such a stark contrast to their actual age. It’s a wonder how they have enough energy to play hide and seek in the morning, cooks your favorite sinigang for lunch, convinces you into taking your siesta by bribing you with chocolate, and then lulls you to sleep at night.

The list of activities could go on forever.

You had your own set of secrets, which up to this day, your parents know nothing about. The bond you had is incomparable because no one makes you feel as young as your lolo or lola.

As you grew up, you knew that you could always count on lolo and lola’s hug to make you feel better. Each embrace felt like home. Hugs that reminded you of summers at their place that smelt of home cooked meals, antique furniture, and butter cookies (which they never ran out of).

With all those wonderful memories, don’t you think it’s high time you take care of them?

Understand how their old age takes effect on them. It’s difficult to think how their bodies tend to become weaker as time goes by. And expenses like hospital bills and medications tend to swell as they get older.

Know that even the simplest gestures, would mean the world to them.

Try accompanying them to church, cooking meals for them, calling them every now and then, or helping them with their expenses by offering to buy healthcare insurance for their hospitalization needs.

A little help goes a long way. It’s your turn to make them feel truly grand.
