5 Bucket List for a Fresh College Graduate

March 23, 2018

Commencement season has begun in the Philippines.  Every year, during the months of March and April, thousands of Filipinos graduate from college. It is a momentous occasion where you can hear and receive endless compliment for a job well done. Enjoy the moment, you really deserve a pat on the back! Congratulations!!!

Now that you have received your college degree, do you think you’re ready to take on the new challenge? Are you excited to go out there and look for a job?  Can you not wait to experience adulthood at its truest form and sense? You may want to pause for a while and take it easy a bit. Don’t get pressured to jumping on it right away because once you start working, you will not be able to stop until you reach retiring age.  Especially when you start paying your own bills.

We have listed down 5 bucket list that you may want to consider before jumping to the real world.

  1. Go to that place you have always wanted to visit - I’m sure you have that specific place in mind that you want to explore, if it’s something easily accessible or perhaps not but you can afford it, then you may want to find time to visit it before you take on the journey of life. It can be a specialty store, perhaps a museum, or maybe something big like going out of the country. As long as you can afford it, why not? Trying out new things make us live healthy, longer, and happy.

Graduation does not separate you from your closest college friends.  Hang out with them as often as you could. You may even set a regular meetup schedule, create new memories as you start the next chapter of your lives!

  1. Learn something new - Learn a new language, a new skill or take driving lessons.  It would be best if it has something to do with the field you have chosen.  These will be beneficial because it will give you an edge and will make you more competitive and well-rounded. Lifelong learning helps a lot in our mental well-being as it involves solving problems, needs our attention/focus, and understanding.  It enhances our creativity and innovation. Your learning efforts support the greater good!

  1. Prepare for your first job - Goal setting gives you a clearer direction as to where you want to be in 5 years time.  Know what you want, it can be related to the course you took but it can also be far from your degree.  It’s important that you look for something you’re most passionate about. As you graduate from college, looking for a job is the next big thing.  Here are some reminders to guide you in your job hunting:

  • Prepare your resume - now is the perfect time to start your resume.  There are different sources online on how to create an impressive one.  The key is, it has to be short and you have to be honest in everything you write.

  • Interview - When you finally get that call for an interview, you have to prepare - mentally and physically.  Get tips on how to dress properly during an interview or how to answer interview questions with confidence.  You should be able to explain everything you have written in your resume. Read and research.

  • Be patient - Don’t stop looking for a job that you want.  Don’t settle for whatever is there. Go to as many interview invites, choose your top 3 and decide which one is best for you.  Aside from the pay, you also have to consider the benefits, the boss and of course the job description.

  1. Socialize - Be sociable. Attend events like seminars, conferences, fashion shows or workshops where you get to meet and talk with different people. This develop your tolerance which is a good character trait, makes you more well rounded.  You get the chance to deal and adapt to different individuals, even cultures and personalities. You learn to respect and appreciate the differences among us.

  1. Invest for your future - When you start working, it is important to know how your money works.  Nowadays, everything you need to be financial literate is just a click away.  You can search what type of investments that suit your needs. Fresh graduates are encouraged to invest young because every year that you age means more expensive premiums to pay.
